Warwick's mayor says the future of a battery storage facility is in question after a fire burned through the weekend.
The blaze
started Friday night in one of the lithium-ion units at the Convergent Energy and Power site on Church Street.
Mayor Michael J. Newhard told News 12 the preliminary cause was water during Friday's storm. He said containment and monitoring efforts have improved since the weekend but raised concerns about toxic chemicals that may have been emitted, even at "safe" levels.
Newhard said there is significant concerns in the community and confirmed he is conferring with his lawyer about next steps, including whether Convergent will be allowed to keep operating.
The hazmat team has been monitoring air quality and says the public is safe, but test results have not been released.
Convergent officials say the system has been idled until crews can enter the site and learn what happened.
In 2023, two severe weather events caused back-to-back fires at Convergent storage sites, including the same facility.
