New York City Mayor Eric Adams and city officials held a briefing to discuss this week's extreme heat.
The city is bracing for the a potential first heat wave of the summer with temperatures well into the 90s. City officials gathered in Downtown Brooklyn to discuss ways to keep cool.
“I encourage all New Yorkers to take this weather seriously. If possible, stay in a cool air-conditioned place. A fan is not enough," says Dr. Ashwin Vasan, commissioner of NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The extreme heat is expected to hit the city Thursday and Friday with extreme humidity and temperatures in the low-90s Tuesday and Wednesday.
For those who are outside for an extended period of time, remember to take breaks, drinks lots of water, take advantage of shaded areas and wear a hat and sunscreen.
NYC's Office of Emergency Management activated the city's heat emergency plan.
"In fact, extreme heat is the most dangerous phenomenon we have in NYC," says Zachary Iscol, commissioner of NYC's Office of Emergency Management.
Cooling centers will be open starting tomorrow and each borough will have centers that are also pet friendly. Click here for more information.
