After being shut down for more than nine hours due to a water main break, a lane of eastbound I-287 and an entrance ramp to the highway have reopened.

Around 1:30 a.m. today, water from a busted main began pouring onto a dangerous spot. Water from a pipe was spilling from under the Anderson Hill Road overpass and onto the eastbound entrance ramp of I-287 in White Plains. The water also began to flow onto the highway and, with temperatures in the teens, it was quickly freezing.

The eastbound entrance ramp had to be completely shut down and one lane closed on I-287.

That eventually caused big backups for the morning commute on both I-287 and Westchester Avenue.

There have been several water main breaks in the area in the past few weeks, and DPW officials say it's partially due to the weather. "It is the cold weather that's causing this and the aging infrastructure," says White Plains Deputy DPW Commissioner Nok Siriphonlai.

Road crews used big front loaders to continually break up the ice before too much formed on the roadway.

DPW officials say fixing the pipe will take a while. "It is in a tricky spot because of the amount of snow that we've had in recent days and also it is up in the woods a little," says Siriphonlai.
