It's been a grueling 24 hours for travelers at Westchester County Airport in Harrison, and it's not looking much better today.

Thousands of flights across the country have been canceled or delayed due to severe storms in different regions. The Hudson Valley dealt with dense fog Monday, while other parts of the country saw heavy snowfall and some regions faced tornadoes.

Monday coverage

Today, departure flights out of Westchester are seeing a number of cancellations to cities such as Miami, Chicago and Washington. Arriving flights seem to be faring much better, with only one cancellation as of early this morning.

The disruptions come at an already challenging time for air travel, in part due to the government shutdown that's left TSA workers short-staffed and unpaid, causing massive lines at security checkpoints at major airports.

News 12 spoke with travelers whose flights had been diverted to different airports due to weather — but their bags were still on the planes landing somewhere else. One woman said her flight to Westchester was diverted to Albany due to Monday's fog. She then had to rent a car to drive to Westchester to retrieve her luggage.

Others were expecting hours-long delays.

Travelers are strongly advised to stay in touch with their airline.
