A man was
fatally shot and another wounded in Sleepy Hollow Monday evening, according to
police.
Sleepy
Hollow police say an officer was on patrol when he heard gunshots on Valley Street
around 9:30 p.m.
He
discovered two men had been wounded. They were both brought to Westchester
Medical Center where one of the victims died from his injuries. The condition
of the other victim has not been released yet.
Neighbors
tell News 12 that the man who died was in his 30s, lived in the area, and was
well-liked.
Police from
Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, and Briarcliff, along with county police, have been seen
canvassing the area near the Margotta Court Apartments.
Luis Lopez, who lives in the neighborhood, said he saw the commotion and then realized it was his cousin who had been shot. "I ran to him, I saw the flesh wound. He was fine for a little bit, but they took him away and things turned bad."
Police haven't released names yet, but Lopez identified his cousin as Manuel Salazar. Lopez says his cousin is well-known and liked in the neighborhood as a hardworking guy who now leaves behind a wife and two small children. "I'm trying to hold it together. I'm hoping the police find these people that did this to him and give them what they deserve," says Lopez.
Manuel Salazar's wife has created a
GoFundMe page to raise money to help lay him to rest. She says she never thought she'd be burying the love of her life. The family is hoping to raise $30,000 toward funeral arrangements.
Police say they don't have a motive for the shooting but are questioning witnesses and have several leads.
There are security cameras throughout the area, and neighbors say they are hoping arrests will be made soon.
