Westchester and Suffolk counties announced a partnership Monday with a plan to go all-electric with county vehicles.
The goal from county executives George Latimer and Steve Bellone is to have zero-emission fleets by 2030.
Both county executives hope the shared framework can be a model for other local governments to follow in an effort to go green.
A new bill signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul aims to ban the sale of all gas-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state by 2035.
The bill says that new passenger cars and trucks, as well as off-road vehicles and equipment, sold in New York are targeted to be zero-emissions by 2035, and new medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles by 2045.
The law also requires the development of a zero-emissions vehicle development strategy by 2023, which will be led by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
Hochul also directed the Department of Environmental Conservation to release a proposed regulation that would significantly reduce air pollution from trucks.
If adopted, the regulation would accelerate zero-emission truck sales, resulting in improved air quality statewide and in communities disproportionately impacted by transportation-related pollution.
