The annual Westchester tradition known as Bicycle Sundays kicked off Sunday morning.

Every Sunday during the summer, part of the Bronx River Parkway will be blocked solely for recreational use. This year, the season has been extended until October.

The event allows bicyclists to safely enjoy 6.5 miles of scenery along the Bronx River Parkway.

Bicycle Sundays have been a tradition since 1972.

Christine La Porta, of the Westchester Parks Foundation, says this tradition is especially important amid the pandemic, a time when people crave nature the most.

"People have, for over a year now, been inside, at home, worrying about their health, worrying about their employment, and parks have been a safe place," La Porta says.

La Porta also says all residents are welcome to take part in the tradition in however they are most comfortable.

"We see people of all ages, all ability levels, families, and they're not only biking, but they're running, walking, rollerblading," she says.

A section of the Bronx River Parkway will be shut off from vehicles starting at the Westchester County Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Bicycle Sunday.
