The famed Westminster Kennel Club dog show will take place in Westchester this weekend for the first time in 145 years.
The show was originally slated to take place at Madison Square Garden in February. However, it was moved to the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown due to the new venue having outdoor space.
News 12 is told local kennel clubs hosted dog shows on these park-like landscaped grounds for three decades.
The pandemic has also caused the show to be held without 40,000 spectators or vendors this year.
"It’s fine because we're doing it for the sport and the dog and ourselves, the enjoyment we get out of it," says dog handler Christina Potter. “It’s going to be fine. We try to treat it like any other trial, so we don't get stressed.”
There are 2,500 champions competing in the show from 206 breeds.
"We have four new breeds this year, and we're excited to welcome them,” says Westminster Kennel Club communications director Gail Miller Bisher. “They’re newly eligible…they may be old breeds in other parts of the world and gaining popularity here.”
