One woman suffered second and third degree burns Saturday after fire tore through a Walton Avenue apartment building.
Residents said they awoke to screams and the smell of smoke. Firefighters responded after receiving a 911 call around 9 a.m. Fire officials say the blaze started in the stairwell on the fourth floor of the six-story apartment building.
Firefighters rescued a 50-year-old woman who suffered burns. Tenants say the woman, who lives on the second floor, was trying to rescue any children that might have still been in the building when she was injured.
Tenants say they are outraged that fire alarms did not go off in the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
