In honor of Women’s History Month, Rockland County has recognized two women for their service to the country and communities.

Dozens attended the county’s event on Wednesday afternoon inside the New City Library as Mattie Moore was given the 2024 Freedom Award. Moore was a nurse for the Army Reserves and served active duty during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

"I just want to thank Rockland County for honoring all the veterans - but the female veterans,” Moore said.

Moore was also a nurse in West Point and has spent time volunteering locally.

Also celebrated was Mary Contreras, who was a nurse in the army during the Vietnam War era. She had joined the service to save her brothers from being drafted.

She then spent decades working at her medical practice in New York City.

In February, she passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's disease and cancer.

"Mary will be remembered for her smile, her dedication to her family and country, strong work ethic, her empathy and wise sense of humor,” her daughter said. “Her time in the military informed her whole life and gave her a base in strength that carried her through.”

Wednesday’s event also served as outreach for other women veterans to learn about services available to them.
