Work begins on Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge bike path
The public is getting a closer look at the future bike path on the new Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge.
Work has begun on the path that will allow folks to walk and bike across the new bridge and state officials have released an animated video to give us an idea of what it will be like.
The bicycle and pedestrian path is more than three miles long and twelve feet wide on the right part of the span. The path has six themed overlooks where users can stop and rest and take in the views.
Bicyclists will be separated from traffic and have designated crossings to keep them safe.
Landings being built in Tarrytown and South Nyack will have parking spaces and other amenities.
Last weekend, traffic was moved on the Rockland-bound span of the $3.9 billion bridge so crews could work on the path.
Some local lawmakers say they believe the bicycle and pedestrian path will help boost local economy by bringing tourists to the area. "This bike path is going to be great for both sides of the river, it's going to be a destination point for travelers and help out local businesses because people who are not familiar with Greenburg and Westchester  and Rockland will now stay in our hotels and shop in local stores," says Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.
The path is set to open sometime in 2019. The big question is how long it will be open for. Some people living in South Nyack say they want the path to close overnight, while cyclists say they want it open 24 hours.
