In a livestreamed press conference, the league's eight teams and their logos were announced, with seven of the eight franchises in markets that already have NFL teams.
The league is set to kick off on Feb. 8, 2020, just after the NFL season wraps. It will be WWE CEO Vince McMahon's second venture into football, after the XFL's first attempt closed up shop in 2001.
The league's website says it is launching to, "reimagine America's favorite sport by putting fans at the center, while leveraging a changing media landscape and evolving consumer viewing behavior. Football is a terrific game, but it's not perfect. We're reviewing every facet of the game, on-field and off, to see where changes can be made to make the game faster and more exciting, with more rhythm and flow."
Games are set to air on ABC, ESPN and FOX.
As the XFL tried to drum up some excitement for its upcoming season, sports fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts about the names and logos.
The XFL website also featured some very dramatic descriptions of the XFL's teams. Here's the New York Guardians':
"Sentries carved of stone. Watchdogs over the metropolis. A prehistoric predator. A beast evolves, turned loose in a new kind of jungle. All teeth and talons, eyes unblinking. They know fear, because they feed off it. They are your first line of defense, and there is no need for a second. The New York Guardians. On duty."
Here's the rest:
The Guardians will play at MetLife Stadium, the home of the Jets and Giants. Their head coach and GM is Kevin Gilbride, who spent nearly a decade on the Giants' staff, winning Super Bowl XLII and XLVI with the team.
The league's draft is set for October. When the league finally gets going, expect less WWE-type gimmicks to build up drama than the league's first attempt, according to league commissioner Oliver Luck.
So don't expect to see any opening scrambles...

...or promos from The Rock...
And (probably not) midfield speeches from McMahon.
