As employees of the Deparmtent of Public Works hit the streets of Yonkers Friday morning to take on the first major snowstorm of the season, 46 of them will return home to receive layoff notices.
?They're professionals,? says DPW Commissioner John Liszewski. ?They come in no matter what the weather is, and they do a good job.?
The Yonkers City Hall has so far mailed out 76 pink slips to full-time employees as a part of its $16 million budget cut. However, the Teamsters union that represents the workers is negotiating with the city to decrease the number of layoffs.
According to reports, the Teamsters may be willing to make concessions to prevent some of the layoffs at the DPW.
