The City of Yonkers kicked off Pride Month with a flag raising ceremony on Friday.
Mayor Mike Spano's LGBTQ+ Advisory Board organized the 9th annual event which other elected officials and board members attended.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community said the Pride flag flying demonstrates visibility and an embracing of the community.
"Some of the divisiveness that we're dealing with during this country and other parts of the country where this is not going to be allowed, it's important that New York or Yonkers is a beacon of inclusion and diversity, and we need to continue to push that out to everyone across the country," said chair of the Mayor's LGBTQ's Advisory Board Anthony Nicodemo.
Yonkers will have its sixth annual Pride Festival Saturday at 2 p.m.
