A man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his sister outside their Yonkers home has been sentenced to 7 ½ years in prison.
Jeffrey Hirschorn pleaded guilty to manslaughter under extreme emotional distress back on July 3, 2020, after he fatally shot his 54-year-old sister Leslie Hirschorn in the neck during a struggle over a loaded gun.
It happened around 6 p.m. on the front lawn of their home on Oakland Avenue in Yonkers, with neighbors witnessing the shooting.
Orders of protection were issued for the neighbors who witnessed the fatal shooting.
Hirschorn said in court today that his family suffered multiple losses leading up to the shooting, including his brother, who died weeks before from COVID-19. He also has a history of mental illness. His elderly mother suffers from medical issues and is in a wheelchair.
She was in court today along with Hirschorn's friends, and she pleaded with the judge to release her son. Her statement expressed a deep sadness for the loss of her daughter, but she was adamant that she did not want her son to spend more time in prison, hoping to spend her last years alive with him.
Hirschorn also gave an emotional account of what led up to this family tragedy, saying he loved his sister and now lives with grief and regret.
Hirschorn has already served three of the 7 1/2 years. When he is ultimately released, he will have five years of post-release supervision.
