Yonkers Police Department is hosting a series of events during National Police Week.

News 12's Jade Nash caught up with some officers as they installed car seats at their Car Seat Installation and Safety Check Event on Tuesday.

"We advocate for people to come down, we can check the seat, we can put it in ourselves this way that the child is the most [sic] safe they can be," Charles Bowen, a detective specialist, said.

The car seat event was held at the department's Police Athletic League Building. It was just one of several activations that the department has planned for National Police Week, according to Detective Sgt. Frank DiDomizio.

"National Police Week is a week that we try to really focus on the department past and present," DiDomizio said.

The department also hosted an open house on Tuesday at the Yonkers Police Museum.

"The preservation of the history of the Yonkers Police Department was actually started by Deputy Chief George Rutledge," said Nick Brilis, a retired officer.

Brilis and other retired officers volunteer at the museum to keep the department's history alive.

Over the years, his colleague and retired Police Capt. Joseph Barca said he's seen Yonkers police grow, especially when it comes to the technology.

"Well, in the day, you had no radios, you had public phone booths and you had these call boxes," Barca said.

Officers said they are excited to continue finding ways to better serve the community in the future.
