Yonkers police arrested a suspect in connection to a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Yonkers on Friday morning.
Police say 78-year-old Yonkers resident Azhar Jamil Said was crossing Executive Boulevard when he was hit by the driver of a red Jeep Grand Cherokee with Florida license plates who then fled the scene.
The father and husband was taken to the hospital with blunt force injuries where he died.
"In conjunction with the detectives in our new AWARE room, the members of our department were able to find the vehicle in a couple of minutes and then find out where to find him in the next day," said Yonkers Police Department Det. Sgt. Frank DiDomizio
The recently unveiled AWARE Crime Control Center fuses real-time video from the city's network of safety cameras with other critical data and geospatial mapping.
Detectives say they located the rental vehicle 28 hours after the incident and identified the driver as 24-year-old Yonkers resident Joseph Dimitri Delgado.
Delgado was placed into custody on Saturday after being located at an undisclosed hotel in the Village of Elmsford, according to authorities.
Authorities say he is unlicensed, and his driving privileges had been suspended due to previous unspecified incidents.
"You can have a suspended license without having a license in the state of New York. Basically, if you don't have a license and you get pulled over, you get a ticket. The DMV creates a license for you even though you never actually went to go get one," DiDomizio said.
Delgado now faces a felony charge for leaving the scene of the accident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
Police caution drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant.
"This is a tragic accident. We want people to be safe. Our main goal is to have our drivers and our pedestrians be safe. So make sure you're looking where you are going. Everyone has a responsibility here," DiDomizio said.
