Yorktown supporters rally for dog owner as shooting suspect returns to court

Dozens of supporters gathered outside Yorktown Justice Court on Tuesday in a show of support for Matthew Steele and his dog, Luke. They were seen holding signs that read “Justice for Luke.”
The rally comes as 61-year-old James Molloy, a retired NYPD officer, was due back in court. He's facing felony charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Luke on Aug. 5.
According to police, officers responded to a report of a dog attacking another dog near Route 118 around 7:30 p.m. Investigators allege the incident escalated when Molloy shot and killed Steele’s dog.
Friends and supporters of Steele described the loss as devastating, saying Luke was an important companion in his life. Demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse throughout the brief proceeding, expressing support for Steele and calling for justice in the case.
Police kept Molloy and his family separated from Steele’s supporters during Tuesday’s appearance. Molloy previously pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court in October.
