Nearly 20 young individuals in Mount Vernon have successfully completed the city's Youth Police Academy.
The program, now in its seventh year, imparts fundamental knowledge about policing while introducing participants to positive role models within the community.
The ultimate aim is to foster better understanding and rapport between the youth and the police force.
Det. David Clarke, of the Mount Vernon Police Department, said, "If one out of those 18 kids picks up and runs with the torch, I did my job."
The participants also engaged in 65 hours of community service, actively cleaning every park in the city.
