A suspect was arrested and another is sought following an armed robbery at a Mount Vernon gas station and police-involved shooting.
Mount Vernon police were called to the gas station at 30 Mount Vernon Ave. at 5:30 a.m. Friday after two people robbed a worker with “what appeared to be a handgun” before fleeing.
NYPD were provided with suspect descriptions and were alerted to the situation, due to the incident's proximity to the Bronx.
Shortly after, NYPD officers around 29 Pearl St. observed individuals matching the descriptions. When approached, police say the suspects fired shots at them.
Mount Vernon Police say an officer returned fire and the suspects then fled on foot.
Police say they found the handgun used to fire at the NYPD officer and other evidence that led them to the suspect’s vehicle.
One suspect was arrested and charged federally with Hobbs Act Robbery. More charges are expected.
The Hobbs Act prohibits actual or attempted robbery or extortion affecting interstate or foreign commerce "in any way or degree,” according to the Department of Justice.
The second suspect has not yet been arrested.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the department at (914) 665-2510.
