3ds agoA Middletown middle school student is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stabbing a teenage classmate during a violent hallway attack in front of dozens of children.
Town of Wallkill police say the 13-year-old student, who attended Monhagen Middle School, is charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
As News 12 reported, the attack on Dec. 13 caused another 13-year-old student to suffer multiple stab wounds, according to police. Authorities say the youth assailant also suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Video obtained by News 12 of the incident shows several teens punching a student who is backed up into a corner before the stabbing occurs. Other students are seen crowded around and heard in the hallways screaming in fear.
A parent told News 12 in an exclusive interview that his son tried to alert school officials the day before the attack that a student was rumored to have a knife on campus. However, the parent says the student who alerted authorities was actually suspended instead because school official thought he was lying.
The Orange County Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case since the teen was charged as a youth offender. Authorities say the student charged faces a maximum sentence of three years in a juvenile detention center because of his age.
Police say the victim is in stable condition.
Meanwhile, administrators at Middletown schools announced Friday night that Monhagen Middle School will open today and Tuesday on a three-hour delay.
It will be the third and fourth three-hour delay in as many days.
This time, however, the students will be allowed to bring district-provided devices and backpacks because they will shift back to academics.
Students will use two entrances and once again go through metal detectors.
The Middletown school district superintendent tells News 12 that nearly half of their students stayed home the day after the stabbing, with 66% attendance.
