Big changes are coming to downtown Nanuet, thanks to a $1.6 million grant from New York state aimed at improving walkability and safety.

The funding will be used to repair and add sidewalks along Church and Prospect streets, areas residents say have long-needed attention. In some spots, sidewalks are cracked, gravelly, or missing entirely — a concern for families, students and commuters who rely on them daily.

Church Street connects three schools, the local library and nearby neighborhoods, making it a key route for children walking to and from school. Town officials say the upgrades will also improve access to the train station and nearby businesses.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann says the project, funded through the state’s Climate Smart Communities program, will significantly improve connectivity throughout downtown Nanuet.

Construction is expected to begin later this year. Residents say the improvements will make the area safer and more accessible for everyone who lives, works and studies in the community.
