Bicycle Sundays have returned to the Bronx River Parkway, offering residents a car-free space to ride, walk and enjoy the outdoors while helping reduce carbon emissions.
A kickoff event was held Sunday at the Westchester County Center in White Plains to mark the start of the seasonal program, which closes sections of the parkway to vehicle traffic on select Sundays.
Organizers say the initiative encourages both physical activity and environmental awareness.
"It helps reduce carbon emissions by eliminating cars from the parkway for more than 12 Sundays per year, and we just really believe that it's important for people to get outside and enjoy parks," said Christine La Porta, CFO and deputy executive director of the Westchester Parks Foundation.
Throughout May, the parkway will be open to cyclists and pedestrians from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In June and July, hours will shift earlier, running from 8 a.m. to noon.
