Days after the sudden closure of the Preston Way Bridge, Mt. Kisco village officials have released a statement explaining why it closed.

This is the first time they've provided an update on what happened and what's taken place since Dec. 3.

The statement reads in part, "The New York State Department of Transportation issued an order to immediately close the Preston Way Bridge, following a recent DOT inspection indicating traffic concerns."

Multiple shoppers told News 12 that trying to take a detour route amid the closure isn't the easiest to navigate. People say it can take them anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to get over to the shopping plaza, sometimes longer depending on what time of day it is.

"It's causing a lot of problems because we have to go all the way around Main Street," said a shopper.

Village officials say they're working with engineers, traffic consultants and the DOT on traffic signal adjustments as part of a formal detour plan to improve the flow of traffic. According to the village, that plan must be approved by the DOT.

"I want it to be safe, of course, so it would be great to know, like what the plans are and what the timeline is for the repair," said Emily Thompson.

As of right now, there is no timeline for when the bridge could reopen.

Village officials say they're working alongside New York state and the MTA to come up with a solution to resolve the structural issues, as they all have ownership and maintenance responsibility of the bridge.
