Newburgh tenants meet to take action against landlord over lack of heat

Residents shared videos showing burst pipes, extensive water damage and mold inside the building. One tenant said the water damage has reached electrical boxes, creating what he believes is a serious fire hazard. He says the problems have persisted for nearly two years.

Residents of the Kenney Apartments in Newburgh gathered Tuesday night, demanding action after months of ongoing issues they say include a lack of heat, hot water and consistent trash removal. Tenants were joined by elected officials and housing advocates as they voiced frustration with Bourne and Kenney Management, which residents say has not returned their calls for months. News 12 has also not received a response from management over the past several days.

Residents shared videos showing burst pipes, extensive water damage and mold inside the building. One tenant said the water damage has reached electrical boxes, creating what he believes is a serious fire hazard. He says the problems have persisted for nearly two years.

Newburgh City Council Member Tamika Stewart told News 12 that one of the building’s two boilers is currently down, contributing to insufficient heat and hot water for many tenants.

As advocates and officials addressed the crowd, residents discussed the possibility of withholding rent and placing payments into escrow. With many tenants not in attendance, specific next steps remain unclear—but residents say they are united and have had enough.
