Hardships can hit when you least expect them, and getting through those challenges can feel nearly impossible.

In this week’s “Rebuilding the Bronx,” News 12 visited Somos Community Care, an organization helping Bronx residents navigate some of life’s toughest moments — from housing instability to food insecurity and unemployment.

The organization recently assisted a sole provider for a family of five who suddenly lost their job. With support from Somos, the family was able to avoid eviction and remain in their home.

“We paid five months’ rent back and are continuing to cover rent until the member gets back on their feet, finds a job and can pay on their own,” said Lidia Virgil, chief operating officer of Somos Community Care.

Virgil oversees dozens of workers who connect residents with services they may not know are available.

“If somebody has a problem with housing, whether it’s mold, rats or cockroaches, we can get them help,” Virgil said.

Support also includes access to nutritious food through a partnership with Nourish Now, which operates a food distribution center in Mott Haven stocked with fresh ingredients.

“If somebody recently gave birth and is in their first year postpartum, or if they’re currently pregnant, they would qualify. The same goes for individuals with chronic conditions or mental illness,” said Caroline Marte, general manager of Nourish Now.

Even families receiving food assistance who continue to struggle with food insecurity may qualify. Eligible residents can receive a week’s worth of groceries delivered directly to their homes.

The food packages are based on nutritionist-approved lists that rotate to provide variety.

Residents seeking assistance or more information about services can visit Somos Community Care online or contact the organization directly.
