A baby girl was fatally shot in East Williamsburg Wednesday afternoon. A person of interest is in custody, sources tell News 12.

Heavy NYPD and FDNY presence overtook Moore and Humboldt streets around 1:20 p.m.

The 7-month-old was shot just steps away from a day care.

A witness called the News 12 newsroom minutes after the shooting and said the baby was in a stroller when gunfire rang out. They say she was scooped up by an adult who ran her to the nearest hospital before an ambulance arrived at the scene.

Sources say the baby died at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.

The shooting comes less than a week after a 9-year-old boy was shot in Brownsville.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke about the incident during a press conference on child care on Wednesday afternoon.

"It was a tragedy that this baby was shot and killed and soon after this press conference, I will be joining the police commissioner to brief the media and the public. Our heart breaks for this family," Mamdani said.
