A controversial pilot program involving psychedelic mushrooms is moving toward a major expansion after a vote in the State Senate that would open participation to any adult.

Lawmakers voted to expand the psilocybin program beyond veterans and first responders, citing research that shows the drug can help with depression and addiction, the State Senate said.

Psilocybin, commonly referred to as a “magic mushroom” compound, has been studied for potential mental health benefits.

The measure would significantly broaden access under the existing pilot program.

The bill now heads to the Connecticut House for consideration.
