A Newark police officer is recovering after being bitten by a man following a crash that also left a dirt bike rider in critical condition Monday evening.
Newark police responded to Avon Avenue at about 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision between a vehicle and a dirt bike.
"Responding Officers located the injured dirt bike driver and attempted to aid the victim when an unknown male intervened and began fighting with the Officers, pushing, kicking, and spitting on them," Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said in a statement.
Police say the man bit the officer's finger during the encounter. The suspect was arrested, and the officer was taken to University Hospital for treatment.
The dirt bike operator also suffered injuries and was transported to University Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition, Miranda said.
Police say the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation.
