New York City's push to clean up its streets is entering a new phase.

As of June 1, properties with one to nine residential units, along with certain special-use buildings that receive Department of Sanitation collection, are required to use official NYC bins for trash setout.

The city says the initiative is designed to reduce trash on sidewalks, create cleaner streets and help keep rats away. Officials say containerizing trash is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life across the five boroughs.

Property owners who already use bins with secure lids that hold 55 gallons or less may continue using them during the warning period, which runs through Sept. 7. Full enforcement of the official NYC bin requirement begins Sept. 8.

The city ultimately plans to containerize all residential trash, including larger buildings with 10 or more units.

Not everyone is convinced the new bins will solve the city's problem.

“You can't put bins outside. For one, people throw garbage in it,” Navedo said.

According to Sanitation, the new requirements are a key step toward cleaner streets and a more organized waste collection system.
