Neighbors say they witnessed what appeared to be a man smash a bus shelter on Prospect Avenue on Thursday.

Hector Flores says he was woken up from his sleep around 1:30 a.m. to loud noises and banging. Out his window he saw a man swinging a heavy object at building gates. Flores says the chaos continued for more than 10 minutes before officers arrived and stepped in.

“He’s over here, smashing windows and stuff, walking around yelling like crazy. I’m seeing like cops over here pull over, start chasing that man. It’s crazy,” he said.

The destructive events left the BX-17 bus stop destroyed. Shattered glass spilled into the streets and sidewalk, as neighbors began to head out the door for work and school.

Police say a 36-year-old man in connection to the incident is in custody.

No charges have been filed at this time.
