Opposition is mounting in the Town of Newburgh over plans for a potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility at 800 Corporate Blvd. Federal lease documents signed in June appear to show plans for a highly secure immigration-related facility at the site.
Hundreds of residents and activists gathered outside Town Hall on Monday to protest the proposal.
The demonstration coincided with a Town Board meeting, where board members unanimously voted to oppose the proposed facility. Residents expressed concern about the lack of information surrounding the project and its potential impact on the community.
The local pushback came hours after Gov. Kathy Hochul announced she had sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security seeking more information about any planned or expanded immigration detention facilities in New York. According to the report, Hochul requested details on whether such projects are being considered, where they would be located and how many people they could hold.
In a statement provided to News 12, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said ICE would not confirm office locations because officers are facing what the agency described as a coordinated campaign of violence.
