A bright streak racing overhead caught the attention of some skywatchers across parts of New Jersey Tuesday morning as a SpaceX cargo mission blasted off from Florida en route to the International Space Station.
The mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, with the Dragon spacecraft packed with more than 6,300 pounds of supplies, scientific equipment and gear destined for astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
While it launched hundreds of miles away just after 6:30 a.m., the rocket's ascent was visible in portions of New Jersey thanks to mostly clear morning skies and the vehicle's high-altitude trajectory.
Those lucky enough to catch the Tuesday morning spectacle might have seen the rocket in what is known as the "jellyfish" phase. The phenomenon occurs when sunlight reflects off the rocket plume at high altitude during twilight, creating a cloudlike appearance resembling a jellyfish.
According to NASA, the uncrewed Dragon spacecraft will make its way to the orbiting laboratory and dock with the space station's Harmony module. The resupply mission includes essential supplies that will support ongoing operations and experiments aboard the International Space Station.
