A young double-organ transplant recipient hosted a blood drive in Rockland County to give back to her community on Monday.

The event was called the Heroes Saving Lives Blood Drive.

It took place at the American Legion Post 1600 in Pomona.

The event was a collaboration between the New York Blood Center and LiveOnNY.

Lauren Shields, 24, served as its host.

Shields had a heart transplant when she was 8 years old and a kidney transplant when she was 20.

Shields is now an advocate for the blood and organ donation movement.

She spoke to News 12 about the importance of blood drives.

"I've received many blood donations and I know how lifesaving they really are," Shields said. "It only takes an hour to come donate and you really do save someone's life."
