Paramedics say that four people are recovering, including one who was seriously injured, after a two-alarm fire tore through an apartment building in Mott Haven early Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out just after 5:30 a.m. along East 135th Street, according to the FDNY. Firefighters battled heavy flames as residents scrambled to escape, some climbing out shattered windows and down fire escapes to safety.
Jordi said he was asleep when his sisters rushed in to wake him.
“It hit me in my face. I couldn’t breathe. I panicked,” Torres said. “I took my sisters out, my brother, and we all left the house. I was without shoes. I was in my PJs.”
Torres said his family of eight lost nearly everything in the fire.
“We’re a family of eight trying to survive, trying to make something for ourselves, trying to just live everyday life,” he said.
Hours after the blaze, dozens of residents were still searching for a place to sleep. Torres said his family was told they could be placed in a hotel for two days.
“What is two days?” he said. “What is two days compared to this? This is five years of my life.”
Families were seen sifting through debris, attempting to salvage personal belongings, clothes and valuables as they waited for assistance from the American Red Cross.
“It’s things that we were going to sell to make money in order to try to find a place to stay,” Torres said.
His mother, Viviana Torres, said the building superintendent offered to relocate the family — but only if they could pay three months’ rent upfront.
“It’s too much money for me,” she said through tears.
News 12 attempted to speak with the building superintendent about the offer, but he declined to comment.
The Red Cross confirmed it is assisting approximately 60 displaced residents.
