Four New York City police officers were arraigned Friday in connection with the September beating of a Yonkers man outside a bar.
The officers and another man allegedly involved in the fight pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Two officers were charged with assault, the other two with misconduct. As the officers left court, their attorneys told the press that their clients weren?t involved in any attack or police cover-up.
Prosecutors say the victim, Peter Cummins, was walking with his girlfriend outside the Rockin? Robin bar when the fight began. They say off-duty officers Thomas Wimmer, Michael McGhee and civilian Patrick Tully assaulted the victim for no reason. Wimmer?s lawyer says his client was trying to break up a fight. The victim was left blind in one eye, authorities say.
NYPD officers Jeffrey Alecia and Stella Ibanez were charged with misconduct. Prosecutors say the two interfered with the investigation. They came upon the scene and handcuffed McGhee, but let him go when they learned he was a cop, authorities say.
The NYPD reviewed the case after the attack.
The suspects were released without bail and will be back in court in April.
