More than 2,000 books have been banned nationwide in schools in the last school year, according to the literary and free expression advocacy organization
PEN America. The organization says it has identified 50 groups advocating for bans in kindergarten through 12th grade.
About 41% of the banned books tell stories of LGBTQ or queer people; 40% have people of color as the main characters; and 21% deal directly with racism.
A director at the organization says the bans are being pushed by well-resourced advocacy organizations.
