State Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt and her husband, a local police chief, helped pull six people from an overturned boat on Greenwood Lake Tuesday.
The Rabbitts say they heard a call of distress come over the police radio and headed out to the spot where a mother, her teenage daughter and four young friends were struggling to keep their heads above water after their small motorboat capsized.
"The boat was tipped over so you couldn't really see it, so immediately you're thinking somebody's under there," Rabbitt says.
Greenwood Lake Police Chief Bobby Rabbitt says he and his wife were expecting the worst, but it turned out all the people aboard the vessel were wearing life jackets.
The Rabbits and another resident pulled the six people safely out of the lake just as the police dive team boat and a fire department watercraft came to the rescue.
None of the six boat passengers, all from New Jersey, were harmed. The woman who was operating the boat says water started rushing into the vessel as she slowed down to make a stop.
