Acting Newburgh City Manager Rick Herbek announced today that the city?s finances are in much better shape then they were a year and a half ago, with revenues higher than expenditures.

City officials listed a number of steps they have taken to help get Newburgh's finances back on track, including consolidating departments and services, and downsizing the city's workforce through retirement incentives and layoffs.

However, some support legislation drafted by state Sen. Bill Larkin (R-N.Y.) that would create a municipal assistance corporation to provide additional financial aid and oversight.

The mayor and city manager don't support the plan, saying it would cost too much and that they already have the oversight of the state comptroller?s office.
