The federal holiday is
celebrated on the third Monday of January because it is near Dr. King's
birthday of Jan. 15. He would have been 93 years old this year.
Dr. King was known for his
nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which protested racial
discrimination in federal and state law.
People from more than 100
grassroots organizations joined Martin Luther King III and his family in a
march in Washington, D.C., on Monday. They're demanding the White House and
Congress to pass voting rights legislation.
Vice President Kamala Harris
also spoke in honor of Dr. King on Monday. She took the opportunity to advance
the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which would give the federal government more
oversight in setting voting regulations.
