After three people in Kiryas Joel were struck by cars in just over a week, the village has begun a new safety campaign.
Officials hope reflector tape will allow drivers to see pedestrians at night. In Kiryas Joel, officials say the Hasidic community's culture of dressing in modest, dark-colored clothing has been a contributing factor in many of the accidents.
"It was all due because drivers couldn't see them - because of the dark clothing," says Moses Witriol, the Kiryas Joel public safety director.
Volunteers plan to hand out the reflector tape in hopes residents will sew them on their clothing, allowing drivers better visibility.
The reflective strips were paid for by the village's Public Safety Department, the Kiryas Joel School District and the Head Start program.
