In Poughkeepsie, school officials canceled classes Tuesday and Wednesday at the middle and high schools. They say threats on social media were brought to their attention Monday, and the decision to close was made out of an abundance of caution.
The district administration learned of a school shooting threat that was posted on the social media app SnapChat.
As police continue their investigation, Dr. Eric Rosser, superintendent of schools for the Poughkeepsie City School District, is asking the community to watch what is happening online.
"The safey of our children, and our staff members and all those who com eto visit us in our schools is paramount," says Rosser.
Roy C. Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls was also closed due to an ongoing investigation involving a threat against the school community.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dwight Bonk tells News 12, “We take the safety and security of our students and staff extremely seriously. It’s our top priority.”
State and local police are investigating the incidents and ask anyone with information to come forward.
Schools in both districts have been closed before this year because of other online threats.
The Wappingers Central School District will be open for students and staff on Wednesday.
