President Joe Biden will be center stage at Westchester Community College in Valhalla on Wednesday where he is expected to discuss the debt ceiling and possible impacts to veteran's health care, school support staff and food programs for seniors.

Political analyst John Murtagh says the visit also constitutes a campaign stop.

“With the 2024 election coming, I think the Democratic Party wants to shore up its support in suburbs like Westchester County," he said.

He believes the reasoning for the trip comes down to Democrats trying to win back New York's 17th Congressional District and fundraising. 

"It makes sense that the head of the party, the head of the ticket – Joe Biden – is going to come to that district, or literally to its doorstep to rally the troops,” said Murtagh. “And last but not least, at the end of the day, you're next door to Manhattan and there is lots of money to be made there. Republican, Democrat, every politician comes to New York."

Rep. Mike Lawler, the Republican who currently represents the 17th District, said in a Monday morning news conference that the media should ask the president about his plan to address the border crisis, which has reached New York City and the Hudson Valley.

"The president probably should speak to that. I'm not sure that he will," said Murtagh.

President Biden has also visited Poughkeepsie and Yonkers within the last 12 months.
