WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Another frosty night is on the way before temperatures bounce back. Widespread frost and freeze alerts are around across the Hudson Valley as temperatures dip tonight into the upper 20s to mid-30s. There is a frost advisory across Northern Westchester County and Rockland County. Across Orange, Putnam, Dutchess and Eastern Ulster counties is a freeze warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
Temperatures will be warming up after Thursday. Thursday is going to be cooler than average, but without the winds we've been experiencing the past several days, it won't feel too cold.
Friday has temperatures going back into the 60s and then over the weekend, the 70s return. Couple that warming trend with lots of sunshine, and you have wonderful weather for all types of autumn activities.
While the days will feel mild to warm, once the sun sets, there will be a touch of a chill in the air. It isn't a bad idea to have a hat, hoodie and/or light coat within reach if you'll be spending time outside after sunset.
There is no rain in the 10-day forecast. The Hudson Valley hasn't had significant rain in weeks. It's starting to show all over the region as Abnormally Dry conditions are popping up.
FALL FOLIAGE COLORS:
• Westchester: low.
• Rockland: low
• Putnam: low
• Orange: low to moderate
• Dutchess: moderate to high
• Ulster: moderate to peak
TROPICS: There are two systems being monitored by the National Hurricane Center.
There is an area of low pressure trying to become organized in the west Caribbean Sea. It will struggle to do so, as it has a 20% chance of development in the next 2-7 days. It will bring heavy rain to portions of Central America later this week, regardless of organized development.
The second system is in the central portion of the Atlantic Ocean. It is unorganized now but will try to become better organized later this week. It is moving to the west-northwest and has a 30-40% chance of development in the next 2-7 days as it heads towards the Leeward and Virgin Islands later this week.
ASTRO: Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3): Look up toward the western sky around about 45 mins to hour or so after sunset (which is 6:10 p.m.) It will be fairly visible with the naked eye but will look better with either binoculars or a telescope. It will look like a "dirty snowball" with its tail pointing away from the horizon and will be near the planet Venus. The comet will be visible into Oct. 21, where each night it will be a little higher in the sky than the previous one.
October Full Moon: Hunter's Moon - The third of four supermoons this year (August, September, October, November) will rise tonight and peak Thursday morning. Look to the southeastern sky after sunset. It will look its brightest at 12:25 a.m. It is named the Hunter's Moon because the full October moon typically signaled to hunters to begin the hunting season and prepare for the colder weather ahead.
