Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida, and now some in the community are worried about family and friends who are in the path of the storm.
"I'm very worried, very concerned,” says Tony Evans, a Mount Vernon resident.
Tony Evans has family in Tampa. He said it's scary to be in New York while his family is directly impacted.
"I just called two of my friends who know my relatives and they said that they had to be evacuated and have to stay at this school,” says Evans.
A local organization is looking to help.
"Afya has a history of responding in Florida,” says Danielle Butin, with the Afya Foundation.
The Afya Foundation will be collecting donations soon to help those impacted by Hurricane Milton. Although it hasn't started collecting yet, its hoping its warehouses will be filled with donations.
“We definitely have a general idea of what's needed and we know we have that inventory in house so we can begin,” says Butin.
The Afya Foundations said it is waiting for a list from its partners in Florida on what donations are needed. It says that once it receives that list, it will pack donations it already have and ones the public brings as quickly as possible.
"We have a number of partners who we've worked with who will be guiding us on that and some of them will be assessing needs in the field,” says Butin.
