A grand jury has indicted the Chester Highway official who was charged with shooting a lost DoorDash driver.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office confirmed the indictment Friday night but did not release any additional information.

The indictment comes after the attorney for Chester Highway Supervisor John Reilly claims his client acted in self-defense.

As News 12 reported, Reilly, 48, allegedly shot at a lost 24-year-old DoorDash driver.

Reilly's attorney, Thomas Kenniff, released a statement, saying:

"The right to defend oneself and one’s family from harm is as old as the law itself. Nowhere is this right more closely guarded than within the sanctity of one’s home. The situation confronting my client on the evening in question was far more complex than has been portrayed. The purported Door Dash driver, who wore no uniform and bore no credentials, was seen moments earlier unlawfully entering the garage of a next-door neighbor. He then approached Mr. Reilly’s door without invitation, bizarrely asking to enter his home, while Mr. Reilly’s wife and young daughter were inside. Mr. Reilly’s intention was not to cause harm, but to warn this man off his property after he had resisted his requests to leave."

"We are confident that once all these facts are brought to light, Mr. Reilly will be absolved of any wrongdoing."

State police said there is no evidence that the victim was engaged in unlawful activity the night of the shooting, but that he was trying to find the right home and knocking on people's doors.

The victim's family said he asked Reilly to charge his phone because it was going dead and he was lost.

Calls for Reilly to resign have continue grow from local leaders.
