If you get an emergency alert on your television or cellphone this afternoon, don't be alarmed!
Here's why:
Test messages will be sent to TVs and radios, along with select cellphones that have opted in to receive test messages.
The test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) will begin at 2:20 p.m. and last until 2:50 p.m.
During the EAS test, radios and televisions across the country may interrupt normal programming to play the EAS test message. The message may be delivered in English or Spanish.
The WEA test will be directed only to consumer cellphones where the subscriber has opted-in to receive test messages. It will be in either English or Spanish, depending on the device’s language settings. Instructions for how to opt to receive the test message on mobile devices
can be found here.
