A beloved educator who helped shape generations of students was honored in Bedford-Stuyvesant with a street co-naming ceremony celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Frank Mickens.

White balloons lined Fulton Street as students, alumni, educators and community members gathered to unveil a street sign bearing the name of the longtime Boys and Girls High School principal. Attendees described the event as a tribute to a leader whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.

"Mick meant the most to all of us. He made sure that we stayed on track to graduate, how to dress for success. So it means everything to be here to honor him today," said alumna Kiya Gayles.

The celebration felt more like a block party, complete with grilled food, live drumming, music and inflatable attractions for families. Former students shared memories of a principal they say inspired them to succeed and helped shape the course of their lives.

"To be honest, for me he was kind of bigger than life. Because of people like Dr. Micken's, I'm a teacher here today - we got to celebrate," said Kareem Benson, a Boys and Girls High School alumnus and current teacher.

School leaders say Dr. Mickens' impact continues to be felt throughout the campus and community. Dr. Grecian Harrison, principal of one of the schools housed within Boys and Girls High School, said she hopes to carry that legacy forward for future generations.

"He believed in not only academic excellence, but he believed that all of our young people can and will succeed. I'm just honored to stand on the shoulders of this great man," Harrison said.

Current students also took part in the festivities, saying the event highlighted the power one person can have on an entire community.

"It feels good to be here today. You know, joining with the community, joining with my school, having a block party. I just like, you know, it's like community building," said student Danielle.

Organizers say the newly unveiled street sign will serve as a permanent reminder of Dr. Mickens' contributions to education, leadership and community empowerment, a legacy many believe will continue inspiring generations to come.
