The body of Sheridan Gorman has been returned to Yorktown after the 18‑year‑old was shot and killed near her college campus in Chicago. Yorktown police and other law enforcement agencies escorted her home Wednesday.

Jose Medina‑Medina, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, is facing murder charges in the case. Chicago’s mayor and the Illinois governor both called the shooting a tragedy.

Gorman’s family publicly criticized top officials for waiting five days to comment on her killing. In a statement, the family said, “Calling this a tragedy is not enough. There must be a full and transparent accounting of what went wrong.” They also said, “Our daughter is not a policy debate. She is a life that was taken, and that demands accountability.”

Funeral arrangements have not been announced. A memorial is scheduled for Saturday at Jack DeVito Memorial Park in Yorktown.
