Flames erupted Tuesday afternoon inside a Yonkers apartment.

It happened just before 3 p.m. on the third floor at 358 Nepperhan Ave.

Officials say it's a three-bedroom apartment unit. Crews worked quickly to put the flames out. They said "overloaded contents" inside the heavily damaged home made operations difficult.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

"The apartment was subjected to heavy fire and smoke, it's unlivable at this time," says Assistant Chief Danny Alicea.

The fire stayed contained to the unit on the third floor, however officials say the smoke spread throughout the building. No one was hurt.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Johnathan Lunn lives in the building. He says he jumped into action when he started to smell the smoke.

“I ran to the front door and I opened it. When I opened it, I just seen the hallway filled with smoke so my first instinct was run straight to the neighbor and started knocking on their door. I just ran all the way from the 12th floor to the 5th, knocking on doors trying to get everybody out," Lunn told News 12.
